Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Colombia’s ICJ Application to Protect Palestinians

Bogotá(Colombia) : Colombia has submitted an application to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to join South Africa’s case against Israel, accusing it of genocide in the Gaza Strip. Colombia aims to ensure the safety and existence of the Palestinian people, particularly vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. The ICJ, the highest UN court, may allow states to intervene in cases and express their views. While other states like Ireland have expressed interest in intervening, Colombia and Nicaragua are the only ones to file a public request so far.

Colombia’s move is seen as a show of support for the Palestinian cause and a message to Israel. President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has been vocal in denouncing Israel’s actions in Gaza. Previously, the ICJ ordered Israel to ensure timely food supplies to Palestinians in Gaza and refrain from acts that could be considered genocidal.

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Israel’s military offensive in Gaza has led to significant casualties, displacement, and humanitarian crises. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the campaign as bringing “relentless death and destruction” to Palestinians. Israel denies targeting civilians and asserts its focus is on combating Hamas.

South Africa initiated the case against Israel, alleging state-led genocide in Gaza, which Israel’s lawyers have refuted as an abuse of the Genocide Convention.
