Body Found Near Maryland Trail; Homicide Suspect

Maryland: A body of a woman was discovered near a well-frequented hiking trail in Maryland on Sunday, prompting an investigation into her suspected murder. The victim, believed to be a 37-year-old woman named Rachel Morin, had been reported missing by her boyfriend. According to Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler, Morin had visited the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air around 6 p.m. on Saturday. When she didn’t come back home, her boyfriend notified the authorities around 11:30 p.m. The incident has led to a homicide inquiry.

Morin’s vehicle was discovered parked at the entrance of the trail, and a volunteer searcher came across her body around 1 p.m. on Sunday, as stated by Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler. The presence of a command center at the scene indicated the gravity of the situation, according to Kathy Tunney, a resident of Bel Air, who shared her observations with CBS Baltimore.

Following hours of investigation at the crime scene, the area has been reopened, but Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler emphasized the need for caution among trail walkers. He stated that he could not yet definitively confirm the absence of a threat to the public.

“We are fully aware that this homicide has raised significant concerns within the community, and we share those concerns,” Gahler stated. “The trail is a valuable asset for our parks and recreation, traversing various parts of Harford County.”

Residents of the typically tranquil neighborhood expressed their disbelief to CBS Baltimore.

“Just this morning, my daughter went for a run to the end of the trail and back,” said Tunney, “We derive enjoyment from it and love living close by. I’ve never felt unsafe.”

Gahler indicated that law enforcement presence on the trail will be heightened during the ongoing investigation.

“We advise all trail users to remain alert to their surroundings,” Gahler added. “While headphones can be helpful during exercise, they can also limit your awareness. Whenever possible, consider walking or jogging with a companion, utilize a whistle or an alert device, and inform your family of your whereabouts. If you come across anything that raises suspicion or discomfort, take out your phone and dial 911, allowing law enforcement to respond.”

Situated approximately 30 miles northeast of Baltimore, the trail is conveniently positioned near the heart of Bel Air.

A GoFundMe campaign initiated by Rachel Morin’s sister, Rebekah, has garnered over $20,000 in support.

“This was not a result of an accident, and she did not meet her fate voluntarily. She deserves a farewell that reflects her exceptional beauty,” expressed Rebekah Morin in the GoFundMe appeal.
